Now Is the Time to Trim Your Shrubs — And Keep Your Lawn Healthy Through the Summer Heat

As early summer sets in, now is the perfect time to give your landscape the care and attention it needs to thrive. At G&H Landscaping, we’re here to help you maintain a beautiful, healthy yard all season long—from proper shrub trimming to essential summer lawn care tips.

Why You Should Trim Your Shrubs Now

Proper annual shrub trimming is more than just a cosmetic touch-up—it’s a vital part of keeping your landscape healthy and full. Trimming helps:

  • Promote healthy new growth

  • Prevent shrubs from becoming thin and leggy

  • Maintain a neat and well-shaped appearance

If you’ve already signed up for shrub trimming services with G&H Landscaping, rest assured our team is currently out trimming and shaping plantings through the end of the season.

Important note: We avoid trimming summer-flowering shrubs such as Potentilla, Hydrangea, and Spirea until after they’ve bloomed. This ensures you’ll still get the vibrant flowers you’re expecting before we shape them later in the season.

Let our experienced crew handle the shaping and care of your valuable landscape plantings!

Lawn Care During Early Summer Heat and Drought Stress

With temperatures rising and dry conditions becoming more common, your lawn is at risk for heat and drought stress. Here are expert watering tips to keep your grass lush and green during the toughest part of the season.

When Is the Best Time to Water Your Lawn?

  • Early morning (before 9:00 a.m.) is the ideal time to water your lawn.

  • If mornings aren’t possible, late afternoon is your next best option.

  • Avoid midday watering, as high temperatures lead to excessive evaporation and can encourage turf diseases.

  • Always check local water restrictions—your town or city may have guidelines in place during dry months.

How Long and How Often Should You Water?

In Typical Summer Conditions:

  • Water daily

  • Rotary and manual sprinklers: 30–45 minutes per zone

  • Stationary/fixed spray heads: 15–20 minutes per zone

In Extreme Heat or Drought Conditions (90°+):

  • Water daily

  • Rotary and manual sprinklers: 45–60 minutes per zone

  • Stationary/fixed spray heads: 20–30 minutes per zone

Remember, these guidelines are a general starting point. Every yard is different—sun exposure, soil type, slope, and recent seeding or sodding all impact watering needs.
